Prasar Bharati plans to merge the news divisions of AIR and Doordarshan in a bid to create synergy between the two and improve their news content. According to sources the plans of merger has already started with the appointment of Harish Awasthi as director general (news).
AIR has a 250 strong team of reporters spread across the country, while DD has a strong editorial staff in Delhi. The idea behind the merger is create synergy between the two, so that the overall news content of Prasar Bharati’s radio and television operations gets a boost.
Prasar Bharati has drawn up an ambitious training programme for reporters and editors. Experts of Cardiff-based Thomson Foundation, a leading media training organisation, will train them.
Earlier BBC had successfully integrated its radio and television news teams and the same model was adopted by Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC).
With integration, Prasar Bharati also hopes to reduce its operating expenses and make better use of its news staff. As a final step, the entire news team would be positioned at the Akashwani Bhawan.
