MTNL to offer cable TV service in Delhi

Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) plans to enter the cable TV segment in the current financial year and will soon apply for a license to start services in Delhi. MTNL is also likely to tie up with broadcasting companies to offer video-on-demand services in Delhi.

According to the industry sources MTNL has most of the infrastructure in place, including optical fibre connectivity and nearly 200 exchanges in Delhi. MTNL has started negotiations with local cable operators to offer these services. After achieving its objectives in Delhi, MTNL plans to target Mumbai.

This is part of MTNL’s plans to position itself as ‘one-stop shop’ for all communications services including basic, cellular, wireless in-local loop, ISDN, ISP, video conferencing, Web hosting and cable services.

MTNL is also restructuring its business by creating four separate divisions for its cellular, basic, long distance and information technology services.
