MTNL in DTH tie-up talk with Prasar Bharati

MTNL and Prasar Bharati are exploring the possibility of a tie-up for television broadcasting using the Ku-band direct-to-home (DTH) platform.

MTNL’s director S Sundresan said that the DTH proposal has been put forward to a core committee set up to explore MTNL and Prasar Bharati’s joint initiative in the Internet as well as convergence sectors. The panel was set up following the Narayanamurthy Committee report on restructuring of Prasar Bharati, which suggested the two entities seek a tie-up for providing Internet-related services in Delhi and Mumbai, where MTNL is a monopoly in fixed time telephony.

Prasar Bharati chief executive, RR Shah did not rule out approaching Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), the government’s other telecom company, which has a countrywide fixed service network.
