Information and Broadcasting Minister, Ms Sushma Swaraj said that I&B Ministry has not drafted the bill for the Media Council, which may replace the Press Council. Rather, a model bill for the Media Council was framed by the Press Council in November 2000 which was sent to three divisions of the ministry for comments.
In keeping with that spirit, the minister has met the Standing Committee chairman, Mr Somnath Chatterjee, to deliberate on the plans to set up the Media Council.
A decision has to be taken on whether the Media Council should be a self-regulatory body or a statutory one, she said.
After the initial step has been taken, the minister is planning to go into the next stages to set up the Media Council. ‘‘I’ve had an internal meeting with the officials of the ministry to discuss the Media Council.’’ Now, she plans to meet editors of newspapers, working journalists who are not editors and owners of newspapers to deliberate on the new Council.
Apart from journalists, the minister would hold discussions with the Indian Broadcasting Foundation (IBF) and the Advertising Standard Council of India (ASCI) to debate on the new body.
