The chief executive officer of
Star India’s new media business, Lalit Ahuja will join
NDS, a News Corp-owned company, which designs and
develops digital equipment including set top boxes, in
August. He will head the India operations of the
Star plans to deploy set top boxes
for its interactive television. Hathway Cable &
Datacom, in which Star holds a 26 per cent stake, will
provide the interactive service on its digital cable
systems. The set top boxes will be deployed on the
Hathway network and sold to the multi-system operator
NDS will provide the middle-ware
between the content and the television. The set top
boxes will be licensed to hardware manufacturers. This
will include cable and direct-to-home set top boxes.
The UK-based NDS will develop
software capabilities and make available technology
personnel in the country. It will concentrate on the
Asian market. Besides the Star network, it will look
at clients outside the group company. It also aims to
provide technology support to Doordarshan.
Star Interactive does not plan to
recruit a new chief executive officer to replace Mr.
Ahuja. Mr. Altaf, who heads Star’s DTH business, will
continue to head the division, but it will not have a
Star Interactive has shelved its
plans to launch with its own portal. This has been
merged with indya.com. The present employee strength
has reduced from 70 to 30.
