Lalit Ahuja to join NDS in August

The chief executive officer of Star India’s new media business, Lalit Ahuja will join NDS, a News Corp-owned company, which designs and develops digital equipment including set top boxes, in August. He will head the India operations of the Bangalore-based company.

Star plans to deploy set top boxes for its interactive television. Hathway Cable & Datacom, in which Star holds a 26 per cent stake, will provide the interactive service on its digital cable systems. The set top boxes will be deployed on the Hathway network and sold to the multi-system operator (MSO) customers.

NDS will provide the middle-ware between the content and the television. The set top boxes will be licensed to hardware manufacturers. This will include cable and direct-to-home set top boxes.

The UK-based NDS will develop software capabilities and make available technology personnel in the country. It will concentrate on the Asian market. Besides the Star network, it will look at clients outside the group company. It also aims to provide technology support to Doordarshan.

Star Interactive does not plan to recruit a new chief executive officer to replace Mr. Ahuja. Mr. Altaf, who heads Star’s DTH business, will continue to head the division, but it will not have a CEO soon.

Star Interactive has shelved its plans to launch with its own portal. This has been merged with indya.com. The present employee strength has reduced from 70 to 30.
