The popular gameshow, Kaun Banega Crorepati and top soap, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, both on Star Plus, are among the front-runners gunning for the top honours in the forthcoming Indian Telly Awards 2001. Koshish Ek Asha on Zee TV and Heena on Sony Entertainment Television (SET) are also contenders for this award.
HFCL-Channel Nine Broadcasting is one of the nominees for best marketing activity of the year. Giving competition to Channel Nine in this category are launch of Kaun Banega Crorepati and ESPN Star Sports cricket. Also in the fray are Discovery for its branding activity and launch of HBO movie channel.
A media-related portal, indiantelevision.com, is launching awards for various aspects of the cable and satellite television industry next month. Called the Indian Telly Awards 2001, it is a way of rewarding professionals behind the scenes of the television business. The first television award event will be held in Mumbai on July 6. Major broadcasters such as Star, Zee, Sony and HFCL-Channel Nine are sponsoring the event.
A first for the business of television, these awards are being planned as an annual event. Although this year's awards will only focus on Hindi and English television, next year onwards, regional channels will also be included. Also, from year 2002, the categories of awards will be expanded beyond the present 17.
Categories such as executive awards are also part of this year's package. Executives in marketing, advertising, distribution and programming have all been included for the awards.
Among the TV programmes, the award categories consist of best TV show, best TV sitcom/comedy, best continuing TV show and best current affairs programme. The cable industry will also have its representatives for the awards. There's a category for multi-system operator (MSO) of the year. The MSO consistently providing optimum excellent service all through the year will be considered for the award.
