International: $500 m Sony media review nears end

Final presentation for $500 million-plus Sony’s American media account will be made next week. Three shops who are slugging it out are Universal McCann, Arnell Group and Starcom MediaVest Group. The trio’s presentations will include details on which agency offices would be involved, who would work on the account, fees and the handling of potential conflicts.

The latter may be a problem: Arnell’s parent Omnicom Group also owns OMD, which handles Universal Studios and MGM; McCann is the incumbent on Microsoft’s Xbox, rival to Sony’s Playstation and Starcom is a finalist in Walt Disney Company’s media review.

Next week’s presentations will, it is thought, be attended by representatives of Sony’s non-US operations, ahead of a possible international media consolidation.
