Govt may allow open tech DTH model

According to satellite channel sources the `open technology model’ can counter both concerns and has emerged as the single biggest factor which could propel DTH as a long-term digital delivery platform. Channels like Star and Zee prefer proprietary technology to increase their viewer bases. The key to effective DTH implementation depended on government assent for an open technology model. While the proprietary DTH model would lead to separate set top boxes for each broadcaster, the open technology model enables multiple broadcasters use their Subscriber Management Systems to broadcast with a common set top box installed on the consumer’s television to de-crypt signals.
