ESPN Star Sports has switched off the service of its two sports channels to the Hinduja-owned INCablenet over dispute on declaration of number of paid subscribers.
ESPN Star Sports is asking for a paid connectivity of 1.75 lakh subscribers in Mumbai while INCablenet is currently paying for 1.5 lakh subscribers. The two sports channels, ESPN and Star Sports, are priced at Rs 16 per subscriber.
ESPN Star Sports had asked INCablenet to increase its paid subscribers since January this year. They were given an extension to April after negotiations. But they went back on their word. After waiting for some time ESPN Star Sports decided to take action and black out service with effect from June 1.
ESPN and Star Sports channels have been blacked out of the Hinduja cable network since June 1. No franchisee of INCablenet is able to show the two channels as ESPN Star Sports signed a company deal with INCablenet.
Negotiations are, however, on for resuming service of ESPN and Star Sports. With the India-Zimbabwe Test series to begin on June 7, the two companies are expected to arrive at a settlement.
