DD plans to provide uplinking facilities to private channels

Doordarshan is planning to provide uplinking facilities to private television channels, which according to the new Prasar Bharati chairman Prof. U R Rao, would open a new revenue stream for the national broadcaster. Prasar Bharati was gearing up to provide such facilities anticipating a policy change from the government allowing private channels to have uplinking facilities from the country.

Mr. Rao said the corporation was trying to shut down the DD channels which were not doing very well. According to him at least two channels would be closed down. An internal analysis was going on and channels.

Mr. Rao indicated that he was not happy with the performance of DD and AIR while agreeing that the two organisations do face several constraints. He denied that the plethora of private channels and private FM radio stations were hurting the interests of DD and AIR.
