B4U puts plan for two new channels on hold

B4U Television Network has decided to put its plans to introduce its two additional channels - B4U Movies and B4U South - on hold. It will continue with its current music and entertainment channels.

Internationally the B4U group has a stable of four channels - B4U Music, B4U Entertainment, B4U Movies and B4U South. Kishore Lulla, chairman of the B4U group, had earlier announced plans of launching the channels gradually into the Indian market.

On the viability of introducing B4U Movies, Ravi Gupta, chief executive officer of B4U, said, "It is not financially viable for us to have a movie channel in India with almost eight channels vying for satellite rights of Hindi movies. We wouldn’t be offering anything different than the present movie channels available in the country.”

The acquisition of movie rights would make a relatively small library in India with about 130 new movies made every year, he added. Instead the company is looking at acquiring additional time slots to showcase their movies on Doordarshan. Presently, B4U shows two movies in a month.

The B4U South channel might be introduced only after the company concludes its initial public offer (IPO).
