Times Network complains to TRAI about Republic TV using dual LCN on DEN Networks
Times Network issued a letter to DEN Networks followed by TRAI notifying them that its competitor Republic TV is available on dual LCN, under English genre and Hindi News Genre on the digital cable service provider. The broadcaster first sent the letter to digital cable TV service provider on September 11 pointing out that it’s violating The Telecommunication Interconnection Regulations 2012, and TRAI’s direction with press release captioned ‘Listing of TV channels on Electronic Programme Guide,’ dated May 31, 2017. With that it asked DEN Networks to correct it at the earliest.

In the letter to TRAI (sent on the same day) Times Network mentioned that it had earlier reported of several violations by Republic TV and demanded immediate action from the regulatory body. “Inaction by TRAI is leading to continuous exploitation and is detrimental to other channels of the same genre, inter alia Times Now,” Times Network mentioned in the mail to TRAI.

It also needs to be noted that after a lot of scuffle Republic TV joined NBA in August.

Earlier in May, NBA had issues with journalist Arnab Goswami's maiden news venture as the former had accused it of running on multiple feeds and hence requested Television audience measurement body BARC (Broadcast Audience Research Council) to withhold its ratings. NBA had urged the body to refrain from aiding and abetting the malpractice. But BARC went ahead and released the ratings following which major English news channels (who are also members of the NBA) opted out of the measuring system to protect themselves from being measured in a non-level playing field.

However, after a series of discussions and complaints to BARC and TRAI, the English news broadcasters resumed their Watermark as they were sufficiently satisfied that due to TRAI's intervention, the malpractices had been discontinued. NBA had also filed a complaint with TRAI regarding the same which led TRAI to issue a mandate against MSO regarding the usage of multiple Logical Channel Numbers (LCNs). This mandate was released within two weeks by TRAI on representations made by NBA.
