Mukta Arts to move SC against Mumbai HC land order

Founded and chaired by Subhash Ghai, Mukta Arts Ltd has confirmed that it would be filing an appeal in the Supreme Court against the Mumbai High Court’s order on the joint venture between Mukta Arts and Filmcity Mumbai, which led to the formation of Whistling Woods International.

As is known, Whistling Woods International – Institute for Film Communication Animation and Media Arts, Mumbai was established in 2000 through a joint venture between Mukta Arts Ltd and Filmcity Mumbai, under which Filmcity was supposed to bring in 20 acres of land as its share of the equity and Mukta Arts was to bring in cash resources towards set-up of a film and media institute. Whistling Woods commenced operations in 2006.

The Court has stayed its order for a period of eight weeks. The order requires Whistling Woods International to surrender 14.5 acres currently not in use while continuing operations for two more years. It is this order that Mukta Arts is filing an appeal against in Supreme Court.

In a prepared statement, Subhash Ghai said, “I am a filmmaker and committed to education of the next generation. I have acted in good faith and in the interest of education at large. I have faith in the judicial system and I am confident that I will get justice in the Supreme Court. Whistling Woods is supported by the entire film and media industry and is appreciated globally as well. I will continue to fight for what I believe is right for the next generation of the Indian media and entertainment industry.”
