Advertising by Telecom Industry in Print in H1 of 2007



Highlights:

• Telecom industry had 6% growth in Print ad volumes during H1'07 over H1'06

• Telecommunication Services & Equipment advertised in the ratio of 65:35

• Telecommunication Equipment saw a colossal growth of 93% during H1'07 compared to H1'06

• Equal advertising in publications from South and West Zones

• ‘Reliance Communications’ led the advertising for Service providers, whereas ‘Nokia’ was at number one position in Telecom equipment advertising

• Combination and Price promotions preferred by Telecom sector
This week, AdEx India analyzes the advertising trends of Telecom Sector on Print in the first half of 2007. Note: The entire analysis is based in Volumes (Col. cms)

Volume Growth in Telecom Sector advertising


• 14% more brands advertised in the Telecom sector in H1 07 compared to the same period previous year.
• Telecom sector had a 5% share in overall advertising in Print in H1 07.
Segregation of the Telecom Sector


Telecom Sector is divided broadly into 3 categories:
  1. Telecommunication Equipment: Ads related to Mobile phones and all Telecom equipment.
  2. Telecommunication Services: Ads related to Basic Services, Cellular Services, Internet along with Telecom services, etc.
  3. Corporate /Public Issues: Corporate advertising as well IPO related ads.
Segmentation of advertising of Telecom sector



• Telecom services had a share of 65% in advertising, out of which 97% was by Cellular Phone services.
• Under Telecom Equipment, Cellular Phones advertising had a share of 81%
• There was no Corporate/Public Issue advertising in H1’07.

Segment-wise growth in Telecom Sector


• Telecommunication Equipment exhibited tremendous growth of 93% in ad volumes whereas Telecom services had a drop of 14% in H1 ‘07 over H1 ’06.
Zone-wise share of advertising by Telecom sector in H1’07
• Telecom Services chose South Zone publications whereas Telecommunication Equipment segment preferred West Zone publications for advertising.

The Top 5 players in Print in H1 of 2007
• Nokia was the strongest contender in Telecom Equipment advertising with 39 brands.
• In Telecom Services, Reliance Communications took the No. 1 position with 53 brands, whereas BSNL ranked 2nd with 65 different services.
New Telecom Equipment & Services Brands advertised
• Overall, there were 154 new service ads whereas 104 new mobile handsets were launched in H1’07.
• New Service providers list saw 2 services related to events like:
  1. 'Reliance Sachin Nazara Pack’: Reliance got Sachin to advertise their ‘World Cup Pack ‘.
  2. IDEA IIFA Star Ki Talaash’: IIFA and Idea Cellular gave two Indian fans an opportunity to become a star at the IIFA weekend in Yorkshir
Share of Sales Promotion in H1 of 2007
• Combination promotional ads were used the most by Telecom Service providers whereas Price promotions were preferred by Telecom Equipment makers.
