Advertising trends in Women’s magazines during Jan-Sept 2006: AdEx study

Key Findings:
• 31% rise in ad volumes in the women’s magazines genre in Jan-Sept ’06 over Jan-Sept ’05

• Post 2nd quarter, there was a rise in number of ads in women’s magazines across 2005-06

• 54% share garnered by women’s Monthlies in Jan-Sept ‘06

• English language magazines had the highest share in this genre

• ‘Independent Retailers’ topped category advertising in the women’s magazines genre during Jan-Sept ‘06

• HLL and L’Oreal India topped advertisers in women’s magazines

This week AdEx India looks at the advertising trends in Women’s magazines genre in Print during Jan-Sept 2006. (Note: The entire analysis is based on Volumes in Col.Cm).
Growth in advertising in Women’s magazines during Jan-Sept ‘06 over Jan-Sept ‘05



• Jan-Sept ‘06 saw a 31% growth in advertising volumes of Women’s magazines over Jan-Sept ‘05
Quarterly trend of advertising in Women’s Magazines across 2005-06



• Post 2nd quarter, rise is observed in ad volumes in the third and the fourth quarters in Women’s magazines across 2005-06
• Peak in number of ads in the fourth quarter in 2005.
Periodicity of Women’s magazines preferred by advertisers in Jan–Sept ‘06



• Advertising skewed towards Monthly women’s magazines in Jan-Sept ‘06
• A high 41% share of advertising in Fortnightlies
Language of magazine preferred by advertisers in women’s genre in Jan-Sept ‘06



• More than 50% of ad volume contributed by English magazines in the women’s genre during Jan-Sept ‘06
• Malayalam and Hindi magazines followed with 15% and 13% share respectively
Top categories advertised in women’s magazines in Jan-Sept ‘06


• Independent Retailers topped the category advertising with 6% share during Jan-Sept ‘06
• Jewellery in 2nd position with 5% share
New categories advertised in women’s magazines during Jan-Sept ‘06


• Educational Insurance was on Top among the new categories which started advertising in women’s magazines during Jan-Sept ‘06
• Torches in 2nd position among the new categories
Top Advertisers in Women’s magazines in Jan-Sept ‘06



• Tough competition between HLL and L’Oreal India with nearly equal share in 1st and 2nd position respectively
New Brands advertised in women’s magazines in 3rd quarter of 2006


• Among the 10 top new brands list, 3 belonged to Cosmetics category during Jan-Sept ‘06
• 3 of the other brands belong to Clothing and Textiles category (10th position saw entry of Bombay Dyeing Sabyasachi Signature Line)
