Snapshot of Print advertising trends in Q1 2007

Highlights:

• 4% growth in ad volumes in Print in Q1 2007 over Q1 2006
• Publications from South, West & North zones constituted 87% share of ad pie
• ‘Services’ sector had the largest share
• One of the fastest growing sectors in Q1 2007 was Telecom products
• Educational institutions remained at the No. 1 position in Q1 ‘07
• Maruti Udyog jumped from Rank 10 to Rank 1 among advertisers
• Automobiles recorded the maximum number of new brand launches
• Advertising in Fashion & Lifestyle magazines exhibited remarkable growth of 137%

This week, AdEx India looks at the advertising trends of Print advertising in the first quarter of 2007. (Note: The entire analysis is based on Volumes in Column Centimeters.)
 
Growth in advertising in Print in Q1 2007 over Q1 2006


• The first quarter of 2007 witnessed a small rise of 4% in ad volumes compared to the same period in 2006
Zone-wise share of ad volumes in Print for Q1 2007


• Publications from South zone led the race with the largest chunk of the ad pie in Q1 2007
• West zone and North zone secured 2nd and 3rd places with 27% and 23% share respectively
Top Sectors in Print during Q1 2007



• Services and Banking/Finance/Economy were the top 2 sectors in Print with 13% and 11% share respectively
• Auto and Education sectors tied for 3rd place with both having approximately 9% share of ad volumes in Q1 07

Fastest growing sectors in Print


• Cosmetics secured the 2nd place with almost twice the growth observed in Textiles/Clothing
• Personal Accessories and Hair Care were also listed among the top 5 growing sectors in Q1 07 over Q1 06
Top Categories of Q1 07 and their Ranks in Q1 06
• Educational Institutions, Corporate/Brand Image and Properties/Real Estates continued to occupy the Top 3 positions in Q1 07
• Among the Automobile categories, Cars/Jeeps saw a shift of two places. However, two-wheelers moved two places down in Q1 07
Top Advertisers of Q1 07 and their Ranks in Q1 06
• Maruti Udyog jumped 9 places to the No. 1 position in Q1 07
• Tata Sky, launched in August 2006, secured a position in Top 10 list in Q1 07
• Royal Government of Bhutan and Tata Teleservices which didn’t find a place among Top 10 players in Q1 06, leaped to 7th and 10th place respectively in Q1 07
New Brand launches in Print in Q1 of 2007
• A total 13,869 new brands were launched in Print in Q1 of 2007 (i.e., 4% dip in count of new brands launched over Q1 06)
• 6 of the Top 10 new entrants belonged to Automobiles sector
• Bajaj Discover/Pulsar DTS-I, Maruti Suzuki Swift Diesel and Tata Indigo XL were the top three rankers in Q1 07
Share of Newspaper and Magazine Genre in Print
• In Newspapers, General Interest genre had the lion’s share of 91% in Q1 07
• In Magazines, Women’s and News/Current Affairs together contributed 44% share of ad volumes
Fastest growing genres in Newspapers and Magazines
• Youth followed by Information Technology genre registered the maximum growth of 52% and 33% in Newspapers during Q1 2007
• Among Magazines, Fashion & Lifestyle was the fastest growing genre with 137% growth in ad volumes in Q1 07 over Q1 06
• Business/finance/Economy was common among the Top 5 growing genres in Newspapers and Magazines
Contribution of advertising in Metro vs Non-Metro newspapers

• Non-Metro city newspapers grabbed 53% share of advertising pie, whereas Metro cities had a 36% share
