2009
has set in and with begin the implementation of plans for the year
ahead. exchange4media undertook a dipstick study recently to find
out what all rank high on the FM players’ wishlist this year. The
year promises to be an action-packed one for the industry with quite
a few important developments lined up.

2008, Bonjour 2009: Agencies at their wackiest best in their greetings |
|
| January
02, 2009 |
|
When
it comes to creativity, agencies are expected to be anything but
mundane or routine. True to their calling, agencies have been at
their wackiest best in saying Sayonara to 2008 and Bonjour to 2009.
exchange4media wades through some of the interesting greetings that
would bring a smile for a long time to come.

| Goodbye
2008; Hello, a happier New Year! |
|
| January
01, 2009 |
|
The
New Year was welcomed variously across India. It was cold and foggy
in some parts of the country and bright and sunny elsewhere. Not
so for the economy though, where there is much gloom across the
world. But we need to be upbeat and herald the year with cheer,
writes Pradyuman Maheshwari.

ahead to a different beat |

‘No
more champagne, and the fireworks are through/ Here we are, me and
you’ – thus sang the Swedish pop group ABBA way back in 1980. But
the words ring true year after year. As the fireworks cool down
and the confetti clears from our eyes, it is time to look ahead
and a time to introspect. We at exchange4media decided to start
the year on a different note. Instead of the regular news reports,
we thought why not let our reporters share their personal experiences
with our readers – afterall, it is the age of interactivity. So
here we are, sharing our experiences with you, giving a peek into
what goes on behind the scenes while working on those news reports
that cover the entire gamut of the industry.

of a reporter for 2009 |

New
Year – a time for resolutions and wishlists. While these past weeks
exchange4media has been asking industry players about their wishlists
for 2009, we thought why not find out about the wishlist of the
reporter who brings to you insights and reports and analyses day
after day, throughout the year. Read on from the pages of a reporter’s
diary.

| New
Year Resolutions: News channels look to creating news and not be the
news |
|
| December
31, 2008 |
|
While
it was not exactly Annus Horribles for the broadcast industry, the
going has been definitely tough in 2008. Drawing flak for its coverage
of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, weighed down by issues relating
to Content Code and self-regulation, news channels are hoping for
a better 2009 with an equal mix of optimism and caution.

| New
Year Resolutions: FM players look to building a strong radio industry |
|
| December
30, 2008 |
|
It’s
that time of the year again when one comes out with their resolutions
for the New Year. exchange4media asked different industry players
about their resolutions and wishes for 2009. This report covers
the FM industry, which saw a lot of action during the year. There
is more excitement in store with Phase III expansion expected to
be announced and the likely introduction of news and current affairs
on private FM radio in 2009.

| Ad
world homeward bound this Christmas as family takes precedence |
|
| December
25, 2008 |
|
Shaken
by the Mumbai terror strikes and somewhat hit by an economic slowdown,
India’s mad ad world is not really in party mood, at least not the
wild festivities of the previous years. There is more introspection
as most prefer to stay close to their families and dear ones.

| ‘Do
Hazaar Nau should not be Do Hazaar What’ |
|
| December
25, 2008 |
|
2008
is a year most in the media industry won’t want to see a repeat
of. Hike in newsprint cost, economic slowdown, the FWICE versus
producers row, being stuck with repeat programmes, the Mumbai terror
attacks and the I&B Ministry cracking the whip over the terror coverage
by news channels. A radio honcho’s view, ‘Do Hazaar Aath has actually
become Do Hazaar Vaat’, sums up the mood. But the industry is hopeful
of a better 2009.

You
do not traditionally put out reports for a January 1 – that is a
day off. Well, we thought it different this year, and some of the
decisions were different. So, here sits the entire exchange4media
team, penning down (keying in rather), what it was like to bring
the news of the media and advertising space to our readers every
single day.

| Ready

|
This
is my fourth year with exchange4media, and what a time it has been!
I head the news desk here and have my hands full editing and rewriting
copies, meeting deadlines. Some say a desk person’s job is a thankless
one. My reward is seeing the clicks go up and the reporter getting
easy access to more news on the basis of his/ her report.

| Out
with your story – Tuhina Anand |
|
| January
01, 2009 |
|
After
covering the beat for few years now, I would like to believe that
I know most of the tricks of the trade and can cajole ‘sources’
to come out with their secrets. But that’s my thinking and it doesn’t
really have to be in sync with reality.

While
2008 was a good year in terms of stories, there were some disappointments
as well. We reporters put our hearts into every story that we do
and keep relentlessly pursuing people when we are strong on a story
scent. So, we are crestfallen when people back out at the nth minute.

|
| January

|
What
a year 2008 was! While time didn’t actually fly, it sure went at
a breathless pace. Things move very fast in media, more so in online
media. 2008 taught me several things. One was to think fast and
act faster.

| News
of the media, for the media, by the media – Puneet Bedi Bahri |
|
| January

|
I
joined exchange4media in May, 2008. From a business newspaper to
a portal on news related to the advertising, marketing and media
industry has been quite a change… and before I realised it, I was
glued to my beats – print and electronic media, which amidst the
economic slowdown saw a lot of activity in 2008.

‘31st Dec, 08’ page of my diary – Esha Madhavan |
|
| January

|
It
has been a little adventurous for me to migrate to the South of
India and take up journalism here. It is definitely not as easy
here as it is to get along in any other Indian city, and more so
in media. I am based in Chennai now, and working as a journalist
here, especially in a niche domain like ours, has been different,
not difficult.

| From
rookie to ‘radio expert’ – Robin Thomas |
|
| January
01, 2009 |
|
The
year 2008 brought me a lot of surprises and, yes, some very valuable
lessons too. Little did I know that my first break would come from
a B2B daily news portal. I joined exchange4media on March 1, 2008,
as an intern, a wide-eyed wonderstruck kid in this vast and exciting
world of advertising, media and marketing.

| Hectic
yet adventurous times ahead – Swapna Rahul Shah |
|
| January
01, 2009 |
|
One
chance I get to jot down my personal experiences at exchange4media
and air my views (and grievances) and I suffer a near writer’s block!
But let me move around that. I am not new to niche publications,
but exchange4media is a different ballgame altogether. I would define
my work as very hectic yet adventurous.

When
I was briefed about writing a few words on my thoughts for the year
gone by at exchange4media, as in the kind of work that I have done
here, I thought maybe I may not have much to write about as this
is only my third week here. So, I will only speak of my experience
in the short time that I have been here.
