High on the perception that language portals will drive the next phase of the Internet, Yahoo! will be launching Indian language portals ‘within a couple of weeks’ from now, a Yahoo! India official said on September 29.
“We are looking at two to six Indian languages initially. We will also enable Yahoo! Chat in Indian languages,” the official said. This comes close after MSN India launched language portals in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.
Asked about the expansion plans of Yahoo! in India, the official said, “We have strong growth plans for India. We are already in talks with some Indian companies and you will hear about some acquisitions or partnerships within six to eight months’ time.”
Yahoo! India recently launched Yahoo! Search Marketing (YSM) to tap the growing market of search engine marketing. An IAMAI-Pinstorm study on the state of search engine marketing in India found that Indian online users did one billion searches per month and that total spending by all advertisers targeting Indian users was Rs 72 crore. Yahoo! hopes to challenge Google’s monopoly on search engine marketing in India to grab a significant pie of this rapidly growing market.
