STAR focus on Indya.com intensifies, cricket included in offering

STAR India’s increased its focus on its digital offerings for some time now and another step in the direction is some activities that the entity has undertaken to strengthen its web platform, Indya.com. In a significant move, Indya.com has been appointed as the official Internet partner for ICC Champions Trophy 2006.

Indya.com would be developing and maintaining the event website – www.iccchampionstrophy.com – throughout the series. The website will offer exclusive video and audio offerings along with a host of interactive services.

ICC CEO, Malcolm Speed, said, “We are delighted to welcome Indya.com into the ICC family as Official Internet Partner for the ICC Champions Trophy. The Internet is a massive communication medium that is still growing and it is a source of information for millions of people. We want the ICC Champions Trophy to be enjoyed by as many cricket fans as possible throughout the world and we look forward to Indya.com facilitating that by providing excellent and high-quality coverage.”

Sameer Nair, CEO, STAR Entertainment India, said, “We are delighted to be the official online partner for the most prestigious events of this season in cricket. Our drive to deliver superior and distinctive content via our online platform – Indya.com – is advanced substantially by this very valuable relationship with ICC. Offering cricket content in conjunction with ICC properties enables viewers to access the best of cricketing action from the most exciting cricket matches of the season in all the three accessed areas – text, audio and video.”

Giving the larger picture here, Ajay Vidyasagar, who would be developing this side of the business for STAR, said, “From this fiscal on, we are going to scale up the operations of Indya.com. At present, it is the number one entertainment site in the country and we have planned quite few things to augment its presence further.”

Why cricket? Vidyasagar replied, “We think people interested in entertainment would also be interested in cricket and we believe that it would prove to be a great driver to the website.”

For most of the worldwide markets, www.iccchampionstrophy.com will be the only website that will allow Internet users access to audio and video packages on the Champions Trophy series. Country specific packages that allow Internet subscribers to buy into a match pack will give them access to some rich archives from previous Champions Trophy games, live clips of the ongoing matches and deferred live highlight packages. In many markets, the website would stream the matches Live.

www.iccchampionstrophy.com will have a unique feature rich application called ‘Matchcast’, which will allow users to view the Live scores, ball-by-ball updates of ongoing matches, player profiles, team profiles and many more. This application would be available free of cost.

Another initiative undertaken by the website is an online contest called ‘Voice of the World Cup’, which will be introduced soon. In order to take part, a user has to dub his/her voice on an embedded piece of archived footage with their version of commentary. The winners will be judged by a mix of public polling and experts from the field of cricket. Two winners will get an opportunity to attend the cricket World Cup to played in the West Indies and be the official commentators for the World Cup’s official website.
