IPL has not lost its steam even in Week 5. In fact, the online viewership has only strengthened. The week (Day 27) kicked off with the Rajasthan Royals vs. the Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Mumbai Indians against the Kings XI Punjab. WAM, an offering from IMRB International, looked at India’s top eight metro cities to see which ones are the biggest consumers of IPL web content or simply put bigger fans!
Mumbai and Bangalore had a much higher percentage of traffic as compared to the rest of the cities which generated over a million page views each, except for Pune which generated just over fifty thousand.
Where are digital viewers following IPL?
The WAM data for April 30 (Day 28 of IPL) showed Google slipping through the cracks. The initial attention and traffic the search website provided was seen slipping. The top three were the usual websites but an unexpected property appeared to knock Google off the top five.
The first of May 1 (Day 30) had matches in Hyderabad and Raipur. WAM detected 8.5 million online visitors on IPL featuring websites. While YouYube, ESPN Cricinfo and IPLT20 remained the main drivers for this number, there were a host of 200 websites that ran IPL related content! Source: WAM May 1, 2013, All India, All SECs
The two matches on May 2 generated a fair amount of traffic on the websites that featured IPL 6 content. Over time, it has been evident that Google and YouTube have lost their lead in terms of generating audiences on the website. Sites like espncricinfo and iplt20 (and its properties) have outperformed others by a huge margin.
Online viewership strengthens
As we progress through the 1 month mark in the IPL 6, the games get better and bigger. KKR won by eight wickets against the Rajasthan Royals on May 3 (Day 32). WAM witnessed numbers higher than what they have been over the month of April. IPLT20 and its properties had a whopping 40 million page views in a single day and over one billion seconds spent by audiences on their website along with YouTube. Espncricinfo still performing strong but faltering in front of the web champ IPLT20!
Once again Iplt20 and its properties topped the list over the weekend (Day 33 and 34) by a gigantic 88 million page views. YouTube was in hot pursuit with only seven million short! The weekend featured three matches – Sunrisers vs. The Daredevils, Indians vs. Super Kings and Royals vs. Warriors. Clearly, everyone enjoyed them!
