Nokia to hold mobile gaming championship

Nokia will launch the ‘N-Gage QD Challenge Mobile Gaming Championship’ on September 14, says Gautam Advani, Multimedia Business Director. The contest will cover 47 cities across the country and will consist of Bronze, Silver and Gold phases. The winner will be crowned India’s mobile gaming icon in October 2004 and walk away with a prize of Rs 10 lakh.

On the growing popularity of mobile gaming, Advani said: “Today, a mobile phone has evolved from a being a communication tool to emerge as a multifunctional device with multiple businesses, lifestyle and imaging capabilities. Keeping this in mind we have intitiated this championship. With this championship, Nokia plans to provide Indian youth a platform to utilise their gaming skills.”

Participants will have to clear the bronze stage before proceeding to the silver stage and then clear the silver phase to be able to play at the gold level. In each phase, participants will be required to play the designated game on N-gage QD, Nokia’s latest mobile gaming device that was launched in June this year. The semi-finals (silver) will be held in four metros and the finals (gold) will be held in the last week of October.

Asked when the N-Gage QD campaign is going to be aired, Advani said: “We should be out with the commercial by the third week of this month.”

Bates India is handling the N-Gage QD campaign. Earlier, Sachin Das Burma, Associate Creative Director, had said: “We are coming up with an engaging campaign that has been shot in India with an international feel to it. The international punch has been added in terms of treatment.”

On whether Nokia is planning to run more international campaigns in India, Advani said, “Depending on the product we will decide whether to run an Indian campaign or an international one. For instance, for N-Gage we wanted an Indian campaign.”

Priced at Rs 9,999, N-Gage QD has extended features. The phone supports advanced smart-phone features such as personal information management, XHTML browser and e-mail. It can also be used for downloading and installing additional 60-series applications. The company claims that the N-Gage has sales of over one million units globally.
