MTNL’s Internet offer attracts 42,000 fresh users

Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) has attracted almost 42,000 fresh users in Mumbai with its free Internet offer. This scheme was launched on January 26 this year.

The 100-day offer was announced by Union Minister of Communications Pramod Mahajan late last year. At this stage, MTNL has a subscriber base in excess of 30,000 in Mumbai.

The scheme allows all Internet subscribers to dial a common number — 4880000. According to MTNL this service is being offered to subscribers of rival Internet service providers (ISPs) also.

It may be recalled that long distance tariffs were reduced by almost 60 per cent in the middle of January this year. This was expected to increase volumes and traffic over time.
