#ModiAtMadison trends on Twitter; PM's speech hailed as one of his best ever

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s maiden visit to USA as head of nation unleashed a torrent of trending hashtags, including #ModiAtMadison, #ModiInAmerica, #ModiInUs, #ModiAtUN, #ModisonSquareGarden, #ModiAtCentralPark.

Netizens, celebrities and influencers alike have applauded Modi’s speech at Madison Square Garden as one of the finest demonstrations of his oratorical skills to date. Media has likened his reception in USA to that of a ‘rock star’.

In what is being touted as a historic speech, Modi enthralled a crowd of around 20, 000, with over 50 congressmen and congresswomen in attendance.

He congratulated the Indian-American community as well as the citizens of India for changing the country’s image across the world.

He said: “Earlier Indians used to charm snakes, but now we play with the ‘mouse’,” a remark that was met with tremendous applause.

Modi remarked that India was in a unique position globally as the youngest country in the world where 65 per cent of the population is under the age of 35.

The three things that set us apart, PM Modi said, are Democracy, Demographic Dividend and Demand, referring to India as a vibrant young democracy, its youth and the opportunities that it offers as one of the largest markets in the world.

Another highlight of his speech was his reference to the country’s successful Mars mission and how a one-km ride in an auto-rickshaw costs us Rs 10, but a trip to Mars cost us Rs 7 per km.

Modi said that the previous government used to take pride in establishing laws, but his attempt is to rid the citizens of India from outdated laws that trap and ensnare them.

During his power-packed speech, Modi also declared that PIO cardholders shall be granted life-long visas and PIO and OCI schemes shall shortly be merged as one.

Twitter has seen a flood of positive tweets during and after his speech.

NDTV’s Vikram Chandra tweeted: “That was such an engrossing speech that I quite forgot my intention to tweet about it!”

India Today Chairman Editor-In-Chief Aroon Purie’s tweet said: “@narendramodiodi has the audience in the palm of his hand. Making them laugh and making them proud.”

Kiran Bedi tweeted: “Modi the Conquerer of Hearts!” and filmmaker Shekhar Kapoor tweeted: “Nothing like hope to kick start a Nation again @narendramodi.”

ZEEL’s MD & CEO Punit Goenka tweeted: “Overwhelmed by the support and mobilisation of the Indian community for#ModiAtMadison, May the force be with him… and with India. Jai Hind.”

Earlier, while addressing Global Citizen’s Festival at Central Park, sharing the stage with Hollywood star Hugh Jackman, Modi had addressed the youth, calling them the beacon of hope for tomorrow. He had ended that speech with the epic line from Star Wars, ‘May the force be with you.’ This was clearly Modi speaking the language of the youth and particularly, speaking to Americans in their own language - a masterstroke.

During his speech at Madison Square Garden, Modi also mentioned that people ask him about his vision, ‘Modiji, please tell us about your big vision,’ they say. I say I reached here selling tea. I am a small man and doing big things for the small man pleases me.’

He invited Indian-Americans to come ‘make in India’ and promised them that for the love he has received from them, he will repay them by making an ‘India of their dreams’.

Rapturous crowds at Madison Square Garden and the barrage of tweets was a testimony to the popularity of the Prime Minister.
