Laptops seek to shed luxury tag; Zenith Computers unveils sub-Rs 15k laptop

There was a time when laptops were priced above Rs 1 lakh. But now, the laptop is ready to shed its luxury tag and become a mass product. Prices of laptops have be steadily coming down, contrary to the general inflationary trend in the market, and with the launch of Zenith Computers’ EcoStyle, the laptop has broken the sub-15k price barrier.

The Zenith EcoStyle laptop, priced at Rs 14,999, is being touted as the lowest priced Windows OS enabled laptop in the market. The EcoStyle laptop would be available across India in time for the coming festive season.

Without doubt the implications are huge for the market.

George Paul, EVP-Marketing, HCL Infosystems, said, “About a couple of years’ back, we saw that the moment of the low-cost PC has arrived in India, and HCL initiated the process with the launch of a sub-Rs 10k PC. Since then, we have seen other IT companies come out with various models of low cost PCs and notebooks.”

According to Paul, “The variations in price points are dependent on components used in configuring the PC – be it the chip set, CPU, storage, memory, OS power supply – and not essentially on price reduction.”

When contacted, Lenovo and HP declined to comment on whether the new Zenith EcoStyle would change the market dynamics or start a price war. Incidentally, Lenovo is coming up with a new product that is slated to hit the markets in the next few months.

Meanwhile, commenting on the launch of Zenith EcoStyle, Raj Saraf, CMD, Zenith Computers, and Ravi Venkatesan, Chairman, Microsoft India, said, “This is an effort by the two companies to further their initiatives in the affordable computing space.”

“Under the Microsoft Unlimited Potential initiative, our effort is to bring sustained social and economic opportunity to people who currently don’t enjoy the benefits of technology. Our aim is to propel a wider acceptance for IT amongst the masses by extending an opportunity to learn, connect, create, and succeed by combining advanced technologies and relevant partnerships,” said Venkatesan.

The EcoStyle laptop is Net-enabled and comes preloaded with the Microsoft productivity suite: an Operating System (Windows XP Home Edition), Microsoft Works (includes Word Processor, spreadsheets and PPT viewer), and Microsoft Windows Live Suite (including Email Client, Messenger and Family Safety from Windows Live One Care).
