According to the latest survey on Internet growth by Nasscom, the number of internet subscribers in India is likely to reach 7.7 million with a user-base of over 50 million in the year 2004-05.
The forecast assumes that personal computer prices would decline by nearly 40 per cent and its penetration would be 13 per 1,000 persons.
The report says Indian Internet market grew steadily in terms of subscribers and the number of active subscribers is projected to touch 1.5 million by end of this fiscal, up by 30 per cent as compared to 1.1 million in March 31, 2001.
In order to increase internet penetration, Nasscom has highlighted some drivers like availability of mobile phones, set-top boxes and hand held devices at prices not more than Rs 3,000 and monthly access costs less than Rs 500-700.
Nasscom has also recommended that there should be access to local language, personalised content such as alerts regarding commodity prices examination results, share prices among others.
The Nasscom was in the opinion that the cable television industry should undergo regulatory changes with government specifying quality of service norms as were implemented for the Internet service-providers.
