Idea plans promoting budding football talent, launches nationwide hunt

In a bid to promote soccer in the country, Idea Cellular has come up with a nationwide talent hunt, which was inaugurated by Tony Ricketts, FIFA ‘A’ coach from Bristol Academy of Sports, UK and Bruno Coutinho, Ex-Captain, Indian National Football Team. The cellular services major has also arranged a 10-day Soccer Clinic at Poona Club to be on till November 17.

Lakshmi Narayan, Head of Maharashtra and Goa Circle, Idea Cellular, said, “The Idea nationwide talent hunt is an attempt to tap the hidden talent among young and budding sportsmen. Moreover, we believe that it is essential to provide them an opportunity that would help them to prove their mettle in the international arena. The other initiative is to promote Pune as a sports destination.”

Acknowledging the potential of football in India, Ricketts said, “Indian football has the potential to compete in all major international tournaments. With the right kind of impetus from the corporate sector and sport lovers it can be promoted and nurtured.”

The team of specialist coaches coming from Bristol UK for the Soccer Clinic includes Tony Ricketts, Stephen Bristow, Gary Green, Mark Hervin, Paul Methringham and Matt Allen.

Two winners of the talent hunt will be awarded a one-year scholarship to pursue advanced training and further education at The Bristol Academy of Sport and Filton College in England. The scholarship includes tuition fees, academy fees, coaching, medical expenses and training kit. Also, select 11 winners of the hunt will be awarded a 15-day training camp at The Bristol Academy. This training camp will include accommodation, food and training expenses.
