IAMAI explores new web frontier

The Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) on Friday conducted a conference on Web 2.0 that covered various perspectives from entrepreneurs, business heads, investors and media professionals. The conference saw eminent speakers from the world of online business, investors and media heads share their view on various aspects related to the web news frontier. It gave a platform for an open discussion on various problems faced by professionals in the field of online business and the opportunities and threats they may encounter with the emergence of Web 2.0

The conference was divided in four sessions, with each focussing a core topic. The topics that were covered across the sessions were ‘Entrepreneur’s perspective: challenging current wisdom’, ‘Marketing perspective: the reality check’, ‘Investor’s perspective: making business sense’, and ‘Media perspective: threats and opportunities’.

The first session on the entrepreneur’s perspective covered how entrepreneurs define the webs new frontier, their view on the medium, and its applicability in India. It also discussed on various business models and how to build them. The panel consisted of speakers like Ashish Kashyap, CEO, MIH Internet; Rehan Yar Khan, Director, Yo4ya.com; Navin Mittal, Business Head, Fropper.com; Ravi Datanwala, Online Business Strategy Manager, Microsoft India; and Vivek Pahwa, Founder, Desimartini.com.

The second session on the marketing perspective saw panellists discussing on whether Web 2.0 is worth adding to the marketing mix. It also covered different views on how marketers can advertise through the new social media network i.e., the user generated content. Shailesh Rao, MD, Google India; Mohammed Iqbal, Senior Planning Director, O&M; Pushkar Sane, Head-Asia, Starcom IP, were some eminent panellists that gave their views in the session.

The next session focussed on the key metrics that investors examine while investing in Web 2.0. Speakers like Suvir Sujan from Nexus India Capital Advisors Pvt. Ltd; Rishi Navani, Managing Director, Matrix Partners; Kanwaljit Singh, Managing Director, Helion VC; Sandeep Murthy from Sherpalo Ventures; and Manik Arora from IDG Ventures.

The last session on Media perspectives unveiled different opinions on whether this new medium be regarded as a threat to the traditional media, or as an opportunity. It also discussed the changing roles of media and how to adapt to it. Surya Mantha, Chief Executive Officer, Web18; Mariam Mathew, Chief Operating Officer, Malayala Manorama; Sanjay Trehan, Chief Executive Officer, NDTV Convergence; and Piyush Shah, Head-Internet & Mobile, HT Media, were the panellists for the last session of the conference.
