The Hindu Group has joined the Net bangwagon with the launch of the e-papers editions of two group dailies - The Hindu and Hindu Business Line – from September 10. While The Hindu’s e-paper is available in three digital editions – Chennai, Delhi and Hyderabad, Hindu Business Line’s e-paper is available for the Chennai edition only at the initial stage.
Giving the rationale behind the launch, N Murali, Managing Director, The Hindu, said, “We wanted to get into this space. It is important to look at different modes of delivering content because digital media is neutral.”
At present, access to both Business Line and Hindu’s e-paper is free, and all the user has to do is register online. Murali, however, said that plans were afoot to make the e-papers subscription based in the future. He said, “We can’t keep it free forever. We will make it subscription based depending on the response.” Murali was confident about getting subscriptions from overseas as well.
The e-paper versions of both the dailies have been developed by Nine Stars Information Technology and IBM using state-of-the-art technology and offering high resolution and versatile features.
Commenting on the viability of turning to an e-paper, Murali said, “There are hardly any entry barriers. It’s too early to talk about the viability. We will have to see as we go along.”
