GSM Association’s Mobile World Congress kicks off in Barcelona today

The GSM Association’s (GSMA) four-day Mobile World Congress commences in Barcelona from February 11, 2008. Despite India’s growing strength in the mobile space, the country does not have much of a presence at the yearly global event. Hungama Mobile’s Neeraj Roy will deliver a key note address on Digital Content at the Congress.

Indian companies have been nominated in two categories at the Global Mobile Awards 2008 – Bharti Airtel for its mChek on Airtel and Idea Cellular for its Bill on Demand and Recall services, both in the ‘Best Billing and Customer Solution’ category. Airtel has also been nominated in the ‘Best Mobile Music Service’ category for its Airtel Live Music on Demand platform.

Hungama Mobile will take part in the MOFILM (Mobile Film Festival) initiative undertaken by the GSMA. Hungama Mobile will be representing Indian cinema and Bollywood at this festival. MOFILM will showcase Ocher Studio and Adlabs’ ‘Sultan the Warrior’, a live action animation on Southern superstar Rajnikanth, and ‘Race’, besides showcasing the album ‘Outrageous’ by Sherlyn Chopra, a music album from the T-Series collection.

Neeraj Roy, MD & CEO, Hungama Mobile, will deliver a keynote address on Digital Content at the Congress. He will be the only Indian among the 22 keynote speakers. Roy would be sharing the platform with the likes of John Chamber of Cisco; Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo of Nokia; Wang Jianzhou, CEO, China Mobile; Paul Jacobs of Qualcomm; Masayoshi Son of Softbank; Shin-Bae Kim of Korea’s SK Telecom; and Ralph de la Vega of AT&T.

The key objectives of the discussion would be to explore digital content opportunities for mobiles across the globe and also to explore mobile operators’ digital content strategies including business models and partnership strategies. In his presentation, Roy would be covering different types of digital services available on mobile and which types were working most effectively in the mobile environment, how different types of digital content were being packaged together, and what were the business models that packed them up.

GSMA is a global trade association representing more than 700 GSM mobile phone operators across 218 countries and territories of the world. In addition, more than 200 manufacturers and suppliers support the Association’s initiatives as key partners. The primary goals of the GSMA are to ensure mobile phones and wireless services work globally and are easily accessible, enhancing their value to individual customers and national economies, while creating new business opportunities for operators and their suppliers. The Association’s members serve more than 2.5 billion customers – 85 per cent of the world’s mobile phone users.
