Facebook, Gmail continue to grow in India in 2010-11: ViziSense

A latest report from ViziSense on Indian websites, from April 2010 to April 2011, reflected a growth of between 30-60 percent in most categories, with a double growth seen in social media.

According to Amit Bhartiya, Business Head, ViziSense, “The Indian internet space has witnessed some interesting and huge changes in the past year. Apart from the introduction and growth of some new online business models such as private clubs, daily discount sites and group buying, an interesting factor to note is the large scale adoption of these formats by the Indian consumers. This growth trend is largely driven by the youth in India which makes it even more important for marketers to make the web an integral and important of their growth plans. Additionally, conventional website categories automobile, banking and stocks /finance have also seen a sharp upward trend partly driven by the overall growth of these sectors last year as well as additional focus by these companies to meet the needs of the discerning Indian consumer.”

Gmail is seen to have grown by 30 percent, widening the gap between itself and Yahoo from last year.
In the social networking and photo/video sharing arena, Facebook continues to dominate over Google's Orkut and Youtube recording a growth of over 100 percent, year over year.

In the online gaming world, Ibibo leads the category, as it shifted it changed its focus to social gaming than social networking.

Moneycontrol dominates over Rediff Money and Yahoo Finance in the stocks/ finance category.

ICICI leads the banking category, with HDFC and SBI following behind. But SBI reflected a fast growth in the online banking space.

Indigo took over Jet Airways in the airlines industry, as it ranks highest in users since January 2011.

Travel ecommerce websites such as Makemytrip and IRCTC record a growth of over 40 percent overall. Makemytrip leads the way, while IRCTC grows by 45 percent, getting closer to the 10 million mark.

Tripadvisor is the leading site for travel information whereas mustseeindia registered a growth of 200% with interest growing in domestic tourism.

In automotive category, Carwale and Cardekho continue to fight neck-to-neck over the past year while the automobile category usage doubles year-on-year.

Live online broadcasting and workplace access during World Cup and IPL resulted in massive growth for sports sites; Yahoo Cricket lead the way followed by ESPN.

Nokia witnessed rising interest and competition from smartphone makers; losing share to Apple and Blackberry
Mobile Phone manufacturers.

Tata Indicom and Reliance Communications reflect growth in uptake of data cards; leading to massive growth in their site usage.

While Indiamart remains undisputed leader within the B2B Commerce space, the e-commerce category saw major changes in 2010-11, with Amazon outdoing e-bay in April for the first time in India.

Naukri continues dominance within the Jobs category; with TimesJobs taking over the No.2 spot from Monster over past year.

Bharat Matrimony and Shaadi continue to fight for No.1 spot; matrimony category registers healthy growth of 30% over past year.

Magicbricks continues as No.1 over the past year in property portals with the category growing by over 30%.

Sulekha and Justdial close-in on category leader Quikr in the B2C Classified category with Justdial registering a 100% growth year over year.

Yahoo Movies remains undisputed leader within the Entertainment category registering a growth of 50 per cent traffic over the past year.
