ESPN-STAR Sports on Tuesday announced the launch of Mobile ESPN, marking its entry into the mobile value added services (VAS) domain in India. Besides information on cricket, the specialised feature service will have latest updates from international soccer matches, Sportscenter news, exclusive interviews and sports schedules.
The new service will be available on major telecom networks such as Hutch, Airtel, Idea, BSNL, etc. from November 15, 2006. Mobile ESPN will be a 360-degree sports service, covering every possible game in all possible formats – voice, video, text and SMS in multiple languages.
R C Venkateish, Managing Director, ESPN Software (India) Pvt Ltd, said, “Mobile ESPN will offer fans unique sports content on their cell phones. Globally, Mobile ESPN has defined a new wireless category. Accordingly, we are positioning this service around the promise that life will never get in the way of sports again.”
The service would initially be available in Hindi and English languages. Regional languages would be added in six months’ time. The marketing plan involves strong on-air push during all the live content, seamless integration with all programmes. ESPN-STAR Sports is investing Rs 40 crore on marketing and is planning a contest to drive the short code 3776.
Prices range from Rs 50 to Rs 100 for a month’s access for any of the specific services. Customer can also avail services on Pay per Use basis based on regular telecom tariffs for such services.
