ESPN STAR Sports acquires mobile rights for Wimbledon in India

ESPN STAR Sports has announced the acquisition of the mobile rights of the tennis Grand Slam event, Wimbledon. Under the terms of the agreement, the Mobile ESPN service will offer a comprehensive range of mobile content from the tennis event to consumers in India. The service was launched in December 2006.

“There is a huge market to be tapped as there is a growing audience for sports like soccer and tennis. We expect a significant demand for video clips of exciting moments of Wimbledon, given the popularity of the tournament in India. There is a huge fan following of players like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Maria Sharapova, and India’s very own Sania Mirza,” said Sanjay Kailash, VP-Ad Sales, Business Development and New Media, ESPN Software India Pvt. Ltd.

The Mobile ESPN service is targetted to be the home of sports for fans across India on the mobile. It will provide the official video clips, match score updates, player specific contents, wallpapers and the official Wimbledon ringtone ‘Purple and Green’. The video clips will contain a daily dose of the day’s highlights that include a preview of the 2007 championship, daily preview, individual match highlights, player interviews and daily round-up, as also archive clips of the golden moments and the 2006 championships round-up.

“This is just the beginning of a series of events that Mobile ESPN is planning to unleash on the mobile platform,” added Kailash.

Mobile ESPN service can be availed by dialing 505-ESPN (3776) on the phone or by sending an SMS to 3776. GPRS users can access the services on www.mobilespn.in.
