Cellular players showcase their latest technologies at Mobile Asia 2008

The four-day Mobile Asia 2008 got underway in the Capital on February 29 amid news that the Finance Minister had proposed to levy 1 per cent excise duty on mobile handsets. This is likely to lead to a rise in cost of mobile handsets. However, the news didn’t dampen the spirit at the Expo, which is being organised by the Indian Cellular Association (ICS). Mobile Asia 2008 was inaugurated by Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dixit.

Speaking on the occasion, Dixit said, “The Indian mobile sector is growing rapidly. There were around 14,000 users a month some years ago, but now the customer base is growing with six million mobile customers a month now. But still there is one billion population to cover and which I consider would not be just a stride forward, but a leap forward from the industry side.”

The exposition is a platform to enhance brand visibility on recently launched mobile phone ranges by the company. The annual expo has always been a favorite destination for the who’s who of the telecommunication and handset manufacturers’ fraternity to exhibit latest and innovative telephony, technologies and services. Going with this year’s theme of the fair – ‘GenNext’, the companies like LG, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, i-Mate, Intex and others showcased their generation next range of handsets.

Shailendra Jha, Business Manager, Mobile Phones, Intex Technologies Ltd, said, “When it comes to flying the flag for established players and brand visibility for emerging ones, these kinds of events play a very important role. With an expected footfall of four lakh, we are looking forward to valuable customer response, both in terms of feedback and sales.”

Devinder Kishore, Director-Marketing, Nokia India, pointed out, “Nokia is a clear leader in the mobile space, and now we are gearing up to take mobility to the next level by offering a range of Internet services to our consumers. Mobile Asia is a perfect platform for us to demonstrate the depth and range of our services portfolio. As market leader, we remain committed to delivering great devices, combined with compelling experiences and services and make it easy for people to unlock the potential of Internet services.”

Along with mobile handset manufacturers, airtime service providers are also present at the Expo in full force. Tata Indicom showcased their complete range of data devices like plug-to-surf USB modem, VAS services like Welcome Tunes, wallpapers, and enterprise products like Remo Mail, SMS gateway, etc. The company held lucky draws for all visitors to their stall with prizes like DVD players, travel bags, etc., given every four hours.

The other companies like RPG Cellucom also took part in similar activities. Biswajit Pandey, Marketing Head, RPG Cellucom, said, “We wanted to thank our customers for the tremendous support they have given us, and there is not better way than to announce a ‘bid n win’ offer for them. It will allow our visitors to take away high-end phones and laptops at never before prices. Lucky customers can win an exclusive and stylish phone like Prada.”
