Over the weekend Amazon.com faced backlash for selling doormats with images of Hindu gods and goddesses, which created a furore on social media. This massive outrage led to the trend #BoycottAmazon, calling for a ban on the US retail giant.
Soon it was discovered that there were pictures of Jesus, Holy Quran and Islamic themed doormats also on sale, which aggravated the situation and led to massive online protests. Angry protesters took to social media to ask fellow users to boycott the Amazon app, while others started down-voting the app on the iOS App Store and Google’s Android Play Store. Amazon was quick to take down these products.
The doormats were listed by an international brand called Rock Bull which sells other products like canvas scroll posters, personalized T-shirts, smartphone cases and mouse pads too.
But there were some who ridiculed and mocked the whole trend.
These controversial products have flouted Amazon’s guidelines related to offensive products which according to the etailer include, “products that promote or glorify hatred, violence, racial, sexual or religious intolerance or promote organizations with such views.”
This is not the first time that Amazon is caught in a controversy over such products. In 2014 Hindu cleric Rajan Zed spotted the website selling women’s leggings imprinted with images of various Hindu gods and forced Amazon to remove them.
