Airtel rolls out 3G in Karnataka; pan-India coverage by March

With the 3G launch, the mobile war is picking up in India again, following closely on the heels of the mobile number portability launch. The private operators are all bringing out their 3G networks now and Airtel is kick starting things with the launch of its services in Karnataka, the operator’s largest circle in the country.

The company plans to launch its 3G services in all 13 circles by March this year, across Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Mumbai, North-East circle, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, UP-West and West Bengal.

The service will come with personalised usage limits to allow people to pick and choose how to best use the 3G services. The company has launched plans which are time based, for light users and also flexible plans for heavy users. It will also allow customers to monitor the usage to prevent people from being surprised by the bill when it arrives.

Airtel CEO Sanjay Kapoor said, “It is the start of a new era as 3G services in India roll out on Airtel’s network. Data traffic on the back of high speed internet and use of social networking has already exceeded voice. India is ushering in the domain – though later than most of the world – but no doubt we will catch up at a much faster speed. 3G is much more than a technology migration – it is a transformational shift. Airtel’s focus would be to bring to its customers an enriched user experience on the back of a world class delivery network.”
