Adlabs Digital Cinema to distribute films over fiber optic network; over 2,000 shows completed

Pioneering the use of optic fiber cable (OFC) network commercially, Adlabs Digital Cinema has started distributing digital cinema films over the OFC network spread over 80,000 km across the country by Reliance Communications. This technology can go a long way in curbing piracy and reducing download time. So far, over 2,000 shows have been completed.

The films are encoded at Adlabs Digital Cinema Mastering Facility at Film City in Mumbai and sent over a 200 mbps connection to its Content Distribution and Logistics (CDL) Hub at Dhirubhai Ambani Knowledge City (DAKC) in Navi Mumbai, from where they are sent further via dedicated 100 mbps OFC network to cinemas as far as Ahmedabad. OFC allows for transportation of digital cinema films that is faster, more reliable and more secure than any other form of delivery.

Commenting on the new technology, Patrick von Sychowski, COO, Adlabs Digital Cinema, said, “The films are distributed at the speed of 100 mbps, which is 100 times faster than the Internet we use at home, thus removing the delay in transporting the films.”

He further said, “We are proud to have offered to our patrons 10,000 screenings of both Bollywood and Hollywood films. These screenings have also included regional Indian films as well as Hollywood films shown in Big Digital 3D format.”

Anil Arjun, CEO, Adlabs Films, added, “Adlabs is implementing globally recognised digital cinema technology standards and processes, and is at the same time pushing the envelope by introducing distribution technologies such as OFC. We intend to be an end-to-end world class service provider covering mastering to delivery on site and are looking at significant expansion in this space aimed to cover 500 screens in the initial phase.”

Commenting on the target audience, Sychowski said, “We are targetting various cinema halls like Inox to use the OFC technology. Also, we plan to distribute our technology in the northern and western parts of India.”

The Adlabs Film City complex, which includes the Digital Cinema Mastering Facility – is the first facility in Asia to receive the prestigious international FACT (Federation Against Copyright Theft) accreditation.

Adlabs is India’s largest cinema chain with about 400 screens spread across India, the US and Malaysia. It has significant presence in the film distribution space with a nationwide presence across India as well as offices in London, New York, Los Angeles and Malaysia.
