‘Sarkar’ on CellOne GPRS;  BSNL gets aggressive in mobile market

With competition rising in the value-added services category, cellular operators are getting aggressive with rate cuts and seamless offerings for their customers.

BSNL announced on Thursday that access to CellOne GPRS home portal would be free of cost. Earlier, users had to pay a monthly rental of Rs 199 for accessing the portal. The announcement was made at the launch of exclusive content-based services being offered by CellOne for the Ram Gopal Verma Production’s film ‘Sarkar,’ starring Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan.

Buoyant about BSNL’s 50 crore revenue earning last year from value-added services, Anil.K.Sinha, CMD, BSNL, said, “Today, downloads form a significant part of revenues for cellular providers. We are therefore aiming to double our revenues this year to Rs 500 crore.”

Commenting on the first-ever film-based content tie-up with ‘Sarkar’ for exclusive wireless content on Cellone, Sinha added, “Nothing connects with the common man like Bollywood and film-based games and content are a rage with people. The game, ‘Sarkar,’ is powered by MAUJ and is a step to provide the best wireless content to our subscribers.”

BSNL will also be introducing new technologies on the wireless front to enable broadband services to be available through the wireless media. Sinha emphasised that the announcement marks the beginning of a series of initiatives, which BSNL is going to take in the near future. “We are going to take steps in order to make our services have the best data connectivity and make it the most reliable and extensive network in the country,” he said.

Upbeat about the tie-up of his movie with BSNL and MAUJ, Verma said, “We believe that this partnership with MAUJ and BSNL for Sarkar will go a long way in the evolution of the mobile entertainment media in India.” MAUJ has a tie-up with Ram Gopal Verma Productions and K Sera Sera to develop and provide wireless content for their existing as well as upcoming movies.

Abhishek Bachchan unveiled the game, which will be available on CellOne Galaxy-BSNL’s GPRS portal, designed, powered and managed by MAUJ, a leading wireless solutions provider.
