Cannes Lions 2017: India all set to break 2013 record of 33 metals

The pressure on India to outdo the 2013 metal haul of 33 metals is mounting as we inch closer to the end of the 64th Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity. This year, the country has won 32 metals so far including a Grand Prix for Good. India set a record for the highest number of metals in 2013 with 8 gold metals, 5 silver metals and 20 bronze metals, bagging a total of 33 metals.

India has already bagged 32 metals despite drawing a blank in categories like Cyber, Mobile, Creative Data, Digital Craft, and Entertainment for Music Lions, and not converting shortlists into a win in the Print and Publishing and Entertainment categories.

Even with a few wins over the next couple of days, India’s 2017 performance will reach new heights. Awards in seven categories are yet to be announced while shortlists for five of those seven are already out. On Thursday, 16 entries from India made the cut for the Film, Film Craft, Creative Effectiveness and Radio Lions categories while no Indian entry was shortlisted in the Digital Craft category. Shortlists for only two other categories remain - Integrated Lions and Titanium Lions.

The awards for the Film, Creative Effectiveness and Radio categories will be announced on Friday night, while the awards for the Film Craft Lions, Integrated Lions, and Titanium Lions will be announced on Saturday night.

In 2013, Indian entries won the most number of metals in the Design Lions and Press Lions categories. Taproot Dentsu’s campaign on farmers’ suicide for The Times of India fetched four Gold Lions and one Silver Lion, the highest number of Gold Lions for India so far.

In 2016 and 2014, India came very close to breaking its 2013 overall metal haul with a total of 27 metals. It is worth noting here that in 2016, India won 27 metals from 11 categories in addition to the Glass Lions category. And in 2014, the country’s contingent brought home the same number of metals from 11 categories.

All eyes are on India to grab more metals and set a dizzying record once again this year.

All the best, Team India!
