WPP finally merges Bates and David; Josy Paul decides to go his own way

After much speculation and even reports regarding their merger, WPP has finally announced the merger of the Indian operations of Bates Asia and David, the second agency of Ogilvy India. The new entity is named Bates David Enterprise.

As reported by exchange4media earlier which stated- “The reason cited for the merger is said to be that it made better business sense to have either a large agency or a boutique agency than having several mid-size ones.” The official communiqué validated this and states that the latest development is in line with WPP’s strategy of investing and consolidating its networks in fast growing key markets like India.

Commenting on the development, Piyush Pandey, Executive Chairman, Ogilvy & Mather (India & South Asia), said, “I am delighted that David is merging with Bates. During a short span of seven years, David created a unique way of finding creative solutions for brands and clients under the leadership of Josy Paul, its Chairman and National Creative Director.”

He added, “ It is unfortunate that Josy has chosen to move on and pursue his personal interests. However, I am certain that his band of youngsters will take forward the spirit of David into the merged entity.”

As CEO, Subhash Kamath will lead Bates David Enterprise, while Mohammed Khan will continue as Founder Chairman of the new entity.

Said Kamath, “ I believe the merger makes perfect sense. Both are very passionate teams and this brings together some great minds on an enviable set of brands. I look forward to welcoming the David team into the family. Even historically, both Ted Bates and David Ogilvy were very close friends and had a lot of respect for each other.”

The integration process is expected to be completed over the next two months. The communiqué states that the day-to-day running of each branch office will be cascaded to senior management in respective cities. It also states that the new agency does not have any redundancy plans. The offices in Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai and Mumbai will offer a complete range of communication services.

The core philosophy of Bates David Enterprise is founded on ‘change’. Going forward, this new entity will be constantly evolving to meet new needs that emerge from changing consumer behaviour.
