General Motors is planning to launch a compact in April 2007. But the automobile major has denied reports in a section of the media that its small car will be named Chevrolet Spark. GM has also denied that it has called for a creative pitch for its small car.
Incidentally, it is being speculated that the proposed small car will be a reincarnation of the erstwhile Matiz manufactured by Daewoo before GM bought over the Korean car maker’s operations in India.
Elaborating on the new car, P Balendran, Vice-president, General Motors India, said, “We are still working on the name of the model and it will be announced closer to the launch of the car. The car won’t be a remake of the Matiz as we are not discontinuing this car. I don’t know from where people got this incorrect information.”
He further clarified, “We have not roped in any advertising agency for this purpose. We do work with various agencies for existing/ongoing and proposed project/business related issues and, as per company policy, we do not disclose such details unless it is in the public domain.”
Balendran added, “As we have not roped in any agency for this purpose, it is too early to talk about business size, etc.”
It may be noted that McCann Erickson and Rediffusion DY&R are handling the GM portfolio currently. While McCann handles Chevrolet Aveo and Optra, Rediffusion handles Chevrolet Tavera and the corporate business accounts. Madison Media is the media agency for the General Motors business.
