Advertising Club Madras, the forum for ad agencies, public relation firms and media organizations as well as advertising professionals in Chennai, is likely to increase membership and collaborate with other ad clubs across India for the betterment of the industry in Chennai.
Ad Club Madras is one of the oldest advertising clubs in the country. It’s a forum for advertising agencies, clients, media houses, media agencies, PR agencies and digital agencies to come together and promote knowledge, foster networking and do more.
In an exclusive chat with exchange4media, K. Anbuchezhian, the President of the Club, stated that clients who were based out of Chennai have shifted their marketing departments to Mumbai and Delhi. This has impacted the agencies as they keep losing out on business.
Moreover, Chennai being a traditional and conservative city has failed to attract young talent from outside the city. “Anyone would prefer working in Bengaluru than Chennai. This has resulted in limited resources with many brands and agencies deciding to find talent outside Chennai,” he says.
He adds that in the current scenario, the key industry verticals providing business for Chennai-based ad agencies are retail, real estate and FMCG. He also admits that digital as a medium is evolving and will slowly add to the growth of digital marketing with clients embracing it too in a phased manner.
Some of the key activities of the Club, having more than a thousand members, include conducting regular seminars, workshops, sports events, etc. for the members. The annual awards event, Maddy’s, was concluded recently and winners were awarded in more than 30 categories.
Speaking about the future of the advertising industry in Chennai, Anbuchezhian feels that the challenge is to improve the quality of work being produced in Chennai that goes beyond the local brand and local markets.
He also feels that the new-age agencies with a start-up mindset are serving quality customers across the city. Speaking about the plans of Ad Club Madras, he said, “We will be focusing on increasing the membership of the club. The other (and bigger) task for us would be to collaborate and network with the ad clubs of other cities to learn and share knowledge.”
Anbuchezhian concluded that the club is keen on working alongside other industry associations like the CII, MMA, FICCI etc. and conduct relevant and impactful events.
