VSNL to hike bandwidth by 145% soon

Videsh Sanchar Nigam will add bandwidth of 565 megabits per second shortly, taking its total bandwidth to over 950 Mbps. "We are in the process of commissioning this bandwidth, and it should be available for consumers in the next 10 days," VSNL's director (Operations) Amitabh Kumar told at a seminar on e-commerce.

Kumar expects revenues from the company's Internet service provider and lease lines business to grow 30 to 40 per cent in the year starting January 2001. Comparative numbers for the previous calendar year were not available, but Kumar said VSNL recorded income of Rs 209 crore from its Internet business and Rs 310 crore from lease lines for the financial year ending March 2000.

Kumar said the increase would come despite a 75 per cent drop in Internet and lease line tariffs from Jan 1 2001, and would be driven by an increase in the number of lease lines.
