Twitter users lampoon Pan Bahar ad featuring Pierce Brosnan

His name is Bond. And he feeds on Pan Bahar! That’s a front page advertisement published in The Times of India today featuring Pierce Brosnan. The Die Another Star is remembered for driving sleek cars, using sophisticated armoury and romancing leading beauties on the silver screen.

The TOI advertisement added yet another feather in his cap but failed to impress Twitterati. Within a matter of few hours, the reaction of Twitter users started pouring in. As far as Twitter trends in Delhi were concerned, Pierce Brosnan, Pan Bahar, James Bond and Bond, all the aforementioned terms began generating responses.

A user wondered how Brosnan’s trip to the city of Kanpur led him into choosing Pan Bahar over a gun. 

The general complaint of users was that there was a clear mismatch between the product and its brand ambassador. 

A television commercial produced by DDB Mudra for Pan Bahar featuring Brosnan also invited heavy criticism. 

Other tweets mocked practises associated with chewing Pan Bahar like health complications and spitting in public.  

In an article for The Indian Express, Nandagopal Rajan, Editor, New Media, expressed shock and disbelief at what he saw. “I looked at the ground in disbelief. A hero at my doorstep, but surely a fallen one. Here he was, one of the first Hollywood stars I admired for his small screen presence, selling something that our government should have banned long ago,” wrote Rajan.  He tore into Brosnan’s decision of endorsing a pan masala.

“But selling a pan masala, even if it takes you to hoardings staring down at India from pricey vantage points, should be something that you do in times of desperation,” he said. 

The production house has already established itself as the leader in the non-scripted genres. However, Rege now wants Endemol to achieve the same in the original scripted zone and film production
