Total recall: George John to walk memory lane with Ulka team of 80s

February 14 is going to be no ordinary day for nearly 75 leading professionals who worked with Ulka in the mid-1980s under the stewardship of George John, now Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of TBWA India. The team of the 1980s who took Ulka to dizzying heights from a no-hope situation will get together at John's residence on the Valentine's Day to recall those "wonderful years". Of course, John's quick to note that the Valentine's Day is only incidental.

John drew inspiration for the get together when he attended a party hosted by McCann-Erickson President Santosh Desai three weeks ago. "There were at the party some 25 people who had worked with Ulka in the mid-1980s. I was touched to see the strong bonding that existed amongst this group and decided to plan this get-together," he explained.

In conversation with exchange4media.com, John recalled the year 1981 when he joined Ulka. "The agency was on the verge of closing down and 47 persons were given the notice to quit in three months. But the team turned around the agency. It became the second largest agency in town, after HTA," he said with a deep sense of pride.

"I have invited 75 members of that team and nobody has said a no," he said. "They can't say no to it! After all, it is a sort of reunion for all of us. We enjoy meeting each other so much and I am glad that George has organized for such a get together. And I am really looking forward to the party," said Desai, one of the invitees and ex Ulka team member of the 1980's.

Rahul Kansal, Brand Director, Times of India, one of the invitees to the party, said, "Some of us have been in touch with each other but this will give us all a chance to meet after a long time."

A similar get-together did happen some three years ago, John said.

Some of the others who will be seen at the party are Executive Director for North India, O&M, Vibha Desai; GM (Key Accounts), Hindustan Times, Amitava Guha; Regional Director, Carat Asia Pacific, P V Narayanamoorthy and CEO, Publicis, Param Saikia.

What a way to celebrate the Valentine's Day!
