Sunil Gupta joins RK Swamy/BBDO as COO

Last year, this month, Sunil Gupta put in his papers at J. Walter Thompson (JWT) and today he joins RK Swamy BBDO as Chief Operating Officer (COO), based out of Delhi. Shekhar Swamy of RK Swamy/BBDO confirmed this development to exchange4media. Says he "Yes. Sunil Gupta has joined RK Swamy BBDO from today".

Gupta was the head of Mumbai operations of JWT (earlier HTA). Gupta, who is known for his no-nonsense attitude, started his professional career in McMillan in 1978. In the late 1978, he joined HTA as an account representative. He became the head of Calcutta office in the year 1988 and held the post till 1992. He was asked to head the Delhi office after Nikhil Nehru resigned. Under his stewardship, Delhi office had the distinction of being nominated as the agency of the year for three consecutive years. Under him Delhi office produced some well known campaigns including Indian Army, Pepsi, Kit Kat to name a few.

In the year 1999, he was called to head the Bombay office after the sudden demise of Anil Bhatia. It was widely expected that he would take over from Mike Khanna after his long innings at HTA but that did not happen and instead of him Kamal Oberoi took his place as the successor to Mike. Gupta was personally responsible in creating the rural wing of HTA. A multifaceted personality, he has anchored TV shows like 'Brand Champs’, acted and directed many plays and is a cricket enthusiast too. With Gupta joining RK Swamy/BBDO, the agency looks poised for interesting times.
