The third edition of Star News MQ – What is your Media Quotient? is culminating in a grand finale in Mumbai on May 27, 2011. The Mumbai regional round will precede the finals the same day. Doing the honours as quizmasters once again are Sam Balsara, Chairman & Managing Director, Madison World, and Vikram Sakhuja, Chief Executive Officer - South Asia, GroupM.

The Mumbai round will see quizmasters Subhash Kamath, Managing Partner, BBH India, and Jasmin Sohrabji, Managing Director, OMD test the participants’ Media Quotient.

This is the third consecutive year that both Balsara and Sakhuja are donning the mantle of quizmasters for the Media Quiz. Commenting on Star News MQ, Balsara said, “The Quiz has become a permanent fixture on the media calendar and more importantly, is one of the few activities that travels to as many as four centres. No other event does. Every year it is growing in popularity and every year the competition to win is becoming stiffer. It is a good combo of learning and fun, packaged in a short evening and creates camaraderie amongst competitors and friends.”

According to Sakhuja, “The property has become bigger and better, and as is with a property, its value has built up over time.” On what set Star News MQ apart from other industry quizzes, he replied that it was focus on media, in addition to marketing. “And, it is also by the industry, of the industry and for the industry, viz., you don’t rely on professional quizmasters.”

When asked whether advertising’s New Gen was as keen about quizzing as in earlier times, he replied, “A quizzer is a quizzer. There is a passion for trivia, and a honed intelligence for making associations out of seemingly disparate concepts – that ensures guesswork is less gut and more judgement.”

Sakhuja was of the view that “one way to build the MQ brand is to be clear on how we aspire to position it.” He observed, “Currently, it is targeted at trivia seekers and those with a yen for things arcane. If you want to take the audience up from 150 to a 1,000, then take what it stands for to a new level.”

The journey of the third edition of Star News MQ began on May 6 in Delhi. This round saw the duo comprising the Godrej&Boyce/Accenture team – Kumar Vaibhav Tanwar and Rohan Khanna – emerge the winner. The quizmasters for the Delhi round were Sudha Natrajan, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Lintas Media Group, and Senjam Raj Sekhar, Senior Vice President and Head - Group Corporate Communications, Bharti Enterprises.

The Media Quiz then moved to Bangalore on May 13. The team comprising Mitesh Agarwal of Sun Microsystems and Anustup Datta of Vertebrand clinched the Bangalore round. Prateek Srivastava, Group President, South, O&M, and Rajesh Gangwani, Senior Vice President (South), JWT, were the quizmasters for the Bangalore round.

The Kolkata round, which was held on May 20, was won by Team Inmaniacs, comprising Gautam Ghosh and Sumantra Mukherjee. This round saw three quizmasters – Sumit Roy, Founder Director, Univbrands; Jayashree Mohanka, former VP - Marketing, Eveready; and Abeer Chakravarty, Executive Vice President, Bates 141.
