After launching broadband services for corporate and retail (iWays - its Internet browsing centers) sectors, Satyam Infoway Ltd (Sify) is now planning to extend the same to the residential segment using fixed wireless technology for the last loop. The ISP has been conducting a pilot test in select residential buildings in Mumbai and Chennai for around a month.
The company plans to commercially roll out the broadband services for home users in large apartment buildings in metros by March 2002. Sify will start with Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad and Bangalore in the first phase.
The new technology will have a one-time installation cost of Rs 3,000 and a fixed monthy rental of Rs 1,250 per connection for unlimited usage.
Currently, DishnetDSL with their DSL (digital subscriber line) services is the only ISP, apart from cable operators like Hathaway, offering broadband services to the residential segment.
