Praveen Vadhera blogs on the passion of storytelling for TV

Michael Patrick King has a very impressive resume -- writer/director/producer best known for his Golden Globe and Emmy-winning work on ‘Sex and the City’ television series, as well as writing, directing and producing both Sex and the City feature films. He is creator and executive producer of ‘2 Broke Girls’, the new comedy on US television for the 2011–12 season.

An informal chat with Michael Patrick King led by Peter Roth, President, Warner Brothers Television explored the process and craft of storytelling in context of the consistent hit series delivered by Michael in television over the years.

The chat threw up some wonderful insights, perhaps universal for great and successful creative people. First was, the need for conviction in their art and craft and the courage to follow through with that conviction when faced with the odds. Invariably it is the conviction that wins in the end, though in his words, “you have to go through many No’s to reach there!”

Interestingly, the most successful shows of Michael are about women and their point of view, whether it was ‘Sex and the City’ or the current number one, a point highlighted by Peter Roth during the question and the answer session, which though obvious, but was often enough overlooked.

Michael was also not shy in acknowledging that he needed help while crafting and writing ‘Two Broke Girls’, a show about 24-year old girls because “today’s women, at 24 years, are light-years ahead from 10 years ago”.

The result was a thoroughly entertaining session, replete with jokes, “who wrote themselves on their own” with a passionate individual, especially passionate about his craft, his stories and characters.
