For the first time in India, ihaveanidea, an international advertising industry community held the eighth edition of its Portfolio Night. The event, held in Mumbai on May 20, 2010, was hosted by Ogilvy India and provided an excellent platform for young copywriters and students from art schools to get their portfolios judged by some of the best advertising minds in the industry.
Started in 2002, Portfolio Night is an annual event, where top creative talents in advertising come together to review the portfolios of students, juniors and creative aspirants in an exciting and engaging environment.
The evening saw one of the never seen kinds of an initiative with the who’s who of Indian creative directors under one roof. There were 69 participants from 14 cities across India and also from abroad such as Chicago, who had registered to have their Portfolios reviewed at the eight edition of the event.
Celebrities for the evening
The evening witnessed the Indian godfathers of advertising all under one roof. Starting from Ogilvy’s Piyush Pandey, McCann Erickson’s Prasoon Joshi and Lowe’s R Balki, the other known Indian creative directors included, Agnello Dias, Rajiv Rao, K V Sridhar, Sumanto Chattopadhyay, Santosh Padhi, Arun Iyer, Ravi Deshpande, Malvika Mehra, Ramanuj Shastri, Bobby Pawar, Josy Paul, Ashish Khazanchi, Raghu Bhat, V Sunil, Senthil Kumar, Sajan Raj Kurup and Vikram Gaikwad.
All these creative directors, so to be termed celebrities of the event were overwhelmed by the participation and created a sense of nostalgia and a bit of regret as to not having this kind of initiative bought earlier to India.
Piyush Pandey, Executive Chairman and Creative Director, Ogilvy South Asia overwhelmed with the response and participation expressed, “I have never felt so much better ever before, as I witness a fantastic camaraderie between all the Creative Directors who have made it a point to come down and witness the young Indian advertising. This is the true celebration of advertising.”
Horn Ok Please!
The event saw three periods of rounds as the participants were divided into three batches. Further on each period was divided into three sub-rounds as each participant had their time to have their portfolios reviewed by three judges names allotted to them.
Furthermore, adding a bit of fun, every judge was given a horn to blow if they liked an idea or work. However, the horns that were blown went countless.
For eager newcomers, Portfolio Night is a great opportunity to meet the industry's most acclaimed creative directors, have their work critiqued, gain advice, and possibly, a job. For agency creative directors, Portfolio Night represents a chance to give back to the advertising community, and to meet or recruit talented young people trying to enter the business.
