Nokia calls for global review of creative duties; WPP puts Bates Enterprise on alert

Finland-headquartered mobile phone giant Nokia has called for a global review of its mobile phones account. This has put Bates Enterprise, which is the creative agency for Nokia in India, on alert. Nokia, a big advertiser, is among the biggest clients for the agency. The size of the business is estimated at upwards of Rs 100 crore.

It is learnt that the agency in India has received a brief mail from the WPP network whose other agency Grey too handles a big chunk of the business in Europe and North America. Bates Asia handles the creative duties in the APAC region. The mail informed the agency of the global review and is more in order to keep the agency posted on the development from the network’s side rather than from other sources. The mail also informs that the agency would be updated on further developments.

Sources in the agency, on condition of anonymity, have revealed that the development is “nothing to be alarmed about”. Bates has shared a long and successful partnership with Nokia in building the brand and it is very much welcome to review the business. “The agency sees it as a challenge and is ready to defend the business,” he said.

It is a bit too early to know which agencies have been invited for the pitch and whether Nokia would call agencies that are not on its roster.

It can be recalled that following a global realignment, in February last year, Nokia had signed MediaCom as its media agency for the Asia Pacific region. However, in India, Maxus was assigned the media duties of Nokia.
